Aircraft maintenance is one of the most important aspects of air travel. It’s what keeps passengers, pilots, and crew safe during flight, and what ensures that all goods being transported arrive safely.
1. Aircraft maintenance has a developed history
Aircraft maintenance is done by aircraft maintenance engineers. These people have been trained to work specifically with aircraft in order to ensure that everything is in order for flight. In Canada, aircraft maintenance engineers may only become certified if they are at least 21 years of age; have completed an AME basic training program or an equivalent program, as approved by Transport Canada; have a certain amount of experience in the civil aviation industry; are able to complete specific aircraft maintenance tasks; complete the required exams; and complete the necessary application to become certified.
2. Aviation is growing
Aviation is an industry that is growing faster than anyone can imagine. In fact, it is expected that the aviation industry is going to have a lot of job openings in the years to come due to its rapid growth, and maintenance engineers will be needed in order to keep up with the rapid pace at which the industry is expanding. The number of aircraft flying is projected to double in the next 20 years, and as long as the aviation industry is growing and more aircraft are being built, the need for aircraft maintenance engineers will always continue to grow.
3. Certifying aircraft
Aircraft maintenance is not just about maintaining aircraft that have already taken flight, it is also about ensuring that new aircraft are ready to fly. When aircraft are built, they must be certified in order to ensure that they are safe for use and to ensure that everybody who enters that plane leaves it safely. Aircraft maintenance is done to ensure the planes are ready to pass certification, and if there is anything that needs to be adjusted, aircraft maintenance is done to fix those things. Only after the aircraft has been certified will it be allowed to fly.

In the age of computers, even the management of aircraft maintenance has become technology-based. Having an aircraft maintenance management software allows for the productivity of aircraft maintenance to go way up. It can help prioritize tasks and saves time and money spent on maintenance by mainstreaming processes. A lot of information regarding aircraft maintenance is being digitized, or has the capability of being digitized.
5. Requires highly trained skills
But that’s not to say that the basics are completely gone. Aircraft maintenance still requires the knowledge and skillset of trained aircraft maintenance engineers. These individuals are still required to do a lot of difficult work, and many people’s lives depend on the work they do. With the digitization of so much, these individuals now have a lot more to work with, but also a lot more help and resources available to them, with computers tools, databases, and other new technology they wouldn’t have had access to before. As the features grow on an aircraft, so do the knowledge and abilities of aircraft maintenance engineers.
