There are many industries and jobs where high temperatures are essential to operate machinery and appliances, create products, heat areas, and perform different functions. To keep high temperature zones safe from fires or corrosion, heat resistant materials are required.

High temperature ropes are versatile cords designed specifically to withstand extremely hot environments. They are used primarily used in boilers, furnaces, heaters, ovens, and other applications where other fabrics cannot withstand extreme heat or contaminates. High temp cords have multiple uses. Some places they are commonly used include as seals, gaskets, and insulation and coil or pipe wraps.

Ropes come in a range of different densities, lengths, and fabrications. The differing materials are designed to withstand the various applications and temperatures in specific locations or jobs. The most common types of high temperature ropes are:

1. Silicone Coated Ropes

Silicone ropes are made of a knitted fiberglass that is wrapped in a high-grade silicone rubber coating. It is made using a fully or partially coated rubber wrap and comes in different lengths and densities. The heat resistant cording can withstand temperatures as hot as 290 Celsius or 500 Fahrenheit.

Silicone braiding is typically used in areas where it will be exposed to high temperatures, flames, molten splashes, sparks, slags –  the waste that forms when smelting metals and fine ores – and other highly flammable or toxic contaminations.

2. Fiberglass Ropes

Fiberglass ropes are made of high end, heat resistant braided fiberglass threads. The braiding can be softly braided for a more pliable application or densely braided for a more ridged product. They can also be wrapped in steel mesh for different uses.

This temperature resistant coil is commonly used as gaskets and seals around doors and other areas in ovens, boilers, and stoves. It is also commonly found in hot industrial packaged products and expansion joints. The fibrous material can withstand temperatures as high as 540 Celsius or 1000 Fahrenheit.

3. Silica Ropes

Silica ropes are made of amorphous silica, an insoluble solid predominantly colourless or white. Different forms of silica are found within the earth’s crust or in volcanic rock. Silica made ropes come in different forms including square braided, twisted, or knitted.  The cord is an excellent product for places like boilers, ovens, or heaters where the temperature is consistently hot.  Silica ropes can withstand temperatures that are 980 Celsius or 1800 Fahrenheit.

4. Ceramic Rope

Ceramic rope is the most heat resistant cording of the four. It can handle prolonged temperatures that are a scorching 1260 Celsius or 2300 Fahrenheit and is resistant to corrosion and thermal shock. Ceramic ropes are manufactured by spinning high quality ceramic fibers together into a braided or twisted coils.

It is a strong, versatile rope that is commonly used in ovens, boilers, and exhaust systems. They can be used in expansion joints, high temperature structure doorways, and pipe wrapping. The ceramic coil can be used as a heat resistant insulator or wrapped in metal sheeting. Other places that require high temperature gaskets or sealers.

Because it is the most resistant to high temperatures, ceramic ropes are commonly used in industries and plants that have extreme heats like welding, aluminum and steel mills, refineries, chemical and power plants, and ship yards.

Countless jobs and industries are surrounded by appliances and surfaces that use extremely high temperatures. Most products cannot withstand the extremely hot temperatures or dangerously corrosive environments. In these industries temperature resistant materials are needed to act as gaskets, coils, sealers, insulators, and form fillers.
